Notable Michigan Journalism People
52. Larry Mack, retired adviser, a member of the MIPA Executive Board, and an inductee into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame, is renowned for his role in organizing the JEA National Convention that took place in Detroit, Michigan, in 1980.
53. Gloria Olman, a retired adviser and member of the MIPA Executive Board for 30 years, was named the National High School Journalism Teacher of the Year in 1992. Additionally, she was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 1997.
54. Bob Button, a retired adviser and member of the MIPA Executive Board, recipient of the Carl Towley Award, was the first high school teacher to be inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame in 1988.
55. Betsy Rau, a retired adviser, a former member of the MIPA Executive Board, and former director of the MIPA Summer Journalism Workshop. Rau was honored with the MIPA John V. Field Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Journalism Education Association. She holds the distinction of being a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund Distinguished Adviser and is also a member of the CMU Journalism Hall of Fame and the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.
56. Cheryl Pell, former MIPA Director, JEA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame nominee in 2007.

76. The Michigan Interscholastic Press Association is older than the JEA. The organization started in 1921 at the University of Michigan under the guidance of journalism Professor John L. Brumm.
77. The first annual state press association (MIPA) conference was held in 1922 at the University of Michigan; it was sponsored by Sigma Delta Chi, the national Journalism fraternity.
78. In 1972 the sponsorship of MIPA changed and it was moved to Central Michigan University.
79. Professor John Field took over from Professor Brumm in 1951, assuming the motivating force as director.
80. In 1982 the sponsorship of MIPA changed and it was moved to Michigan State University.
